Dragon Festival Opening Ceremony
Mon Oct 02, 2023 4:20 pm
Second Day, Tenth Moon,
Twenty-Fourth Year of Recent Awakenings
In accordance with the will of Her Majesty and in upholding the duties charged to me as Court Chronicler, I hereby submit the account of Dragon Festival Opening Ceremony.
As the seventh bell rang through the courtyard, many lingered in anticipation of the shimmering red portal. Those gathered were awaiting the start of the Dragon Festival and all that they might bring. They did not have to wait long as the already small courtyard grew even more crowded.
Duke Lucus and Duchess Oriana, in her more dragon-like form, led the denizens of the Rumis through the shimmering portal and into the courtyard. The Duke greeted those present and explained that the dragon held a special significance for the Duchy. It is represented by their patron guardian and plays a large role in their heraldry and architecture. The Duke explained that he hoped that along with the recently amended treaty, this festival would prove a welcome experience to learn of each other's culture and way of life.
The Duke then welcomed the denizens of the castle into his home and the Duchy itself. The Duke and Duchess then led those who had followed along through the glowing moss-filled tunnels of the conclave. He explained small pieces of history as he went, noting their uses for things and what those who reside in the Outer might hope to expect once the festival is over.
Eventually, his Grace led everyone through a series of tunnels bustling with glowing flora until a river was reached. Duke Lucus shifted from his sharing of history and instead sunk into the role he had settled in to help the ‘story’ of the festival. He shared with the group, "Goblin thieves have raided the Dragon's Lair, making off with a vast horde of ill-gotten goods which they have taken to their lair here in the Glowing Caves. The sailing explorer-trader Hvitserk has embarked on a quest to retrieve the dragon's horde and return it to the mighty beast in placation, lest the dragon's wrath fall upon the land. Aid Karl Hvitserk by retrieving stolen treasures in exchange for coins to use in his trade tent, or keep the goods for yourself -- to the victor go the spoils."
He relayed that there would be three types of treasure chests, varying in rarity, for people to hunt and explore. Bronze treasure chests which were being protected by goblin plunderers were to be the most common. Silver treasure chest, which could only be located through a treasure map, would take one into exploration all over the Outer. And finally, the gold treasure chests would be protected by a fierce sea monster called Hafgufa.
He further explained that while there were many things to fight there was also much to do for those not martial, including aiding in the brewing of mead and activities set up by the Karls and Huskarls of the conclave. He shared, "Throughout the Glowing Caves you will find a number of goods beyond the treasures in the goblin chests. Blue crystals from the Crystal Cavern, cuttings from the Great Mushroom Tree, and lichens from the Glowing Tree. The seer Siv will purchase these goods in exchange for a small portion of the coin to be used in Hvitserk's tent if you can find them."
He then freed the group, permitting them to venture on and explore. He gestured to the group and bid luck seeking their fortunes, "And this is where I shall leave you to explore on your own. Venture throughout the Glowing Caves and you will find the tradesman Hvitserk, his wife, Magnhildrm, and the seer, Siv. Karl Hvitserk's trade tent will not open for trade for a couple more days, but all else is available to you. In the interim, Karl Magnhildr has tasks for you all at the tent. Seek out your fortune in the caverns beyond, and return the dragon's horde, lest we all face her wrath."
The caves were visited by over two dozen denizens between those from the Duchy and the Castle proper. Some of those this chronicler ran into most frequently included Duke Lucus, Duchess Oriana, Serjeants Nexian and Aranta, Lieutenant Darvius, Yeoman Kobe, Master Leodegrance, Mistress Filusae, sers Cordon, Doisou, Venture, and Izrith, seras Trenna, Flora, Arlenia, Jacquette Ygritte, Riana and Kyndra and this chronicler.
