Attack on His Excellency During Ardor Masquerade
Sun Feb 21, 2021 6:21 am
Twenty-First Day, Second Moon,
Twenty-Second Year of Recent Awakenings
In accordance with the will of Her Majesty and in upholding the duties charged to me as Junior Chronicler, I hereby submit the account of Attack on His Excellency During Ardor Masquerade.
On the nineteenth day of this moon, guests assembled in the Outer Bailey theatre for an Ardor celebration hosted by the Awakeners. The theme was 'Once upon a Time'. There was an abundance of cake and refreshments being served, with all guests wearing elaborate wigs and masks. Acting Royal Awakener sera Taite, in a charming ivory gaberdine mask, wore a winged twilight-purple and dark claret cascading gown. (Readers with a keen eye for fashion may wish to view the Clothiers' traditional 'Who Wore What', to be found upon the castle's bulletin board.) Sera Taite wished the guests an enjoyable Ardor Masquerade, declaring, "The Awakeners have decided to create a scene which promotes new beginnings so we can work toward our own Happily Ever Afters."
The masks and wigs were provided by the Awakeners for the event, such that guests would arrive in their finest clothes and proceed to choose the items before they entered the theatre. These decorative accoutrements ranged in colour from white and ivory to copper and oxblood, creating a confusing disarray of red and white faces. Once filled with over twenty people, all similarly attired, the theatre indeed was an uncannily anonymous place in which to stand. One guest poetically commented upon the atmosphere as being like a 'wood-of-no-names'.
The only unmasked persons in the theatre were those attending in a professional capacity. Seras Auriela and Diana, and ser Enamar wore no masks during their mesmerising musical and balletic performance. Armswoman Kassa was in attendance as a member of the Watch, along with this chronicler. The Unity performers held the attention of the guests for the first part of the ball, later slipping on their masks to become one with the faceless crowd for general dancing and frivolities.
Though a room full of anonymous individuals may sound like a sinister prospect, this chronicler observed nothing criminally untoward within the theatre itself. The guests enjoyed themselves with such entertainments as dancing with anonymous partners, jocular conversation, and trying to guess who was behind each mask. The cake was much praised by all who sampled it. It was a rich and indulgent creation of vanilla and peach, with creamy frosting and gooey peach niblets.
Later in the evening, Armswoman Kassa ran swiftly from the room, shortly followed by Nurse Enamar. The ser was subsequently found in the theatre lobby, shivering and attempting to clean his hands of blood. He appeared deeply shaken, in the manner of someone who has seen terrible things.
Though the Nurse was not in a fit state to give a clear account of what had occurred, he did utter that "someone tried to kill His Excellency". When concerned denizens asked after Lord Boreas' health, Nurse Enamar confirmed "I healed him", to the relief of all present. The facts of the matter are still to be elucidated.
This chronicle will be subject to changes and corrections. I humbly ask all readers to please indicate to me discreetly, any falsehoods I may have mistakenly communicated. It is by means of the conservation of the Past that we continue to serve Her Majesty and give substance to those that follow.
